Great recipes
We are on our second week off preparing meals from this book. While not everyone in my family has enjoyed the recipes, I surely have. Even better, I am happy that this book kick started my freezer meal journey and I have 1 months worth of meals stocked in my freezer. I do recommend this book

The Ultimate Make-Ahead Cookbook
Included are 125 freezer-friendly recipes a solid variety of basic recipes along with some unique and interesting combinations. The book is not particularly healthy relying heavily on bacon, cheese, cream cheese, mayonnaise which will or won’t be an issue depending upon the user.It is obvious a lot of work went into the creation of this book. It is well organized and provides good basic information that is necessary if new to preparing meals ahead. I like that nutritional information is given which is helpful and I like the wide range of recipes but it would have been helpful to provide substitutions for healthier ingredient options. The ingredients and spices are not generally exotic so they should be readily available wherever shopping. Some of the recipes are weird like a Chicken Enchilada Casserole that uses penne pasta instead of either corn masa meal or corn tortillas but most look recognizable versions of dishes like Stuffed Cabbage and Stuffed Peppers, etc.I make many meals ahead and the method is one learned from various cookbooks which when freezing meals cook them in large batches and then freeze in meal-size portions. The method for freezing in this book is to do it before the dish is completely prepared—some ingredients cooked and some raw while generally keeping the components separate when freezing. No doubt this method works but the other way which is to cook completely, freeze and when ready defrost and heat or warm is faster and less effort especially when hungry and trying to quickly get a homemade meal served. Personal preference. The lack of photographs is disappointing as that is often part of the consideration of what dish to prepare and they also add greatly to the enjoyment of pursuing a cookbook. There are only 12 photos in this book and one is wasted on attractively arranged raw ingredients and one is wasted on a picture of pans, baking tins and storage containers. From a design standpoint the print book uses too much colored ink—lots of brown and turquoise blue–which can be difficult for people with even good vision to read. A cookbook is an instruction book and design considerations like livening up the ink hues should be put aside for practical considerations. The font size is 8 to 9 point which is small and quite common in print cookbooks which is another reason black ink is a user-friendly choice because it the is easiest to read particularly if the book is laying down on a counter in the kitchen being repeatedly referred to while preparing a recipe. The index in the back of the book is very helpful in locating a recipe quickly by name or main ingredient. The book is a good starting point and useful reference.

Love the interesting recipes!
I adore so many options for my allergic family members! So many practical recipes that aren’t what I already make every day!

LOTS of recipes, but all quite similar cooking technique.
This cookbook is for absolute beginners, it assumes no knowledge (nor common sense). It opens with pages about meal planning, provides a checklist for common spices, utensils and appliances, what foods should not be frozen… a short section on best practices.I’m afraid I have some criticisms of this book.1. Most of the recipes say to bake the meat, mix a sauce. If refrigerating, put the sauce on the meat before refrigeration. If freezing, keep the meat and sauce separate until ready to use, then cook the meat and combine with the sauce.2. NONE of the recipes are for low sodium (which includes more than salt), low fat, low sugar… NONE of the healthy diets that are recommended for heart disease, diabetes, weight control… These are recipes for completely healthy people who are not trying to eat a good diet. But at the end of every recipe in this book is given the basic nutritional value eg sodium, fat, protein, sugar. At the top of each recipe is whether it is gluten- and nut-free.3. Maybe it’s not relevant, but none of the recipes say how long a certain dish can be kept frozen before it is not recommended for human consumption. The book doesn’t say what temperature is low enough to be considered ‘refrigeration,’ or ‘freezing.’ Referral to US Food and Drug Administration Guidelines might have been helpful.Positive aspects are:1. This book’s 100-some recipes are arranged by breakfast, lunch, dinner, holiday meals. It has recipes for all major meats and veggies as well as vegetarian dishes.2. Most recipes use spices but not very exotic ones, or combinations.3. There are several ‘ethnic style’ recipes — easy to make ethnic “style foods such as Thai chicken wings and chile.4. There’s a vegetarian section.

I bought this for a nephew who is a keen on cooking healthy food, and has just acquired a freezer. Firstly, although it is not stated in the description, all the measurements are American – cups of this and cups of that. I do think cookbooks should be sold stating whether they include British or American measurements. Then the recipes are also mainly for American food – ‘Crispy cheddar chicken strips’, ‘Tomato hamburger macaroni soup’, ‘Prosciutto and cheese stuffed fish’ etc. Not the sort of food he likes.Sadly, I have decided to give this to the charity shop

There were 3 or 4 pictures in total in the whole book. The recipes lack seasoning and flavours. I may have found 2 recipes I may use out of the whole book but will also tweak them a bit. In all I regret my purchase.

This book is misleading. From the pictures and promo I was expecting 125 meals to freeze and defrost/cook quickly after work. The freeze in advance is as simple as take your uncooked meat and freeze. Then freeze rest of ingredients – then pick up recipe and cook when ready. Truly a waste of money!

There are typos regarding cooking times and temps — so you have to be very careful.1 recipe was great (no errors in printing)1 recipe was terrible — I chose to follow the instructions and the misprints wrecked it.
